8.January.2010 20.41

Breakfast at 6.15 am today then into the taxis for our ride to meet our bus. It was still raining when we left Bijagual. After getting our bus we drove 3 hours to the coffee plantation for a tour and lunch. We then got back into the bus to go to a souvenier shop where we took a tour (all wood and handmade). Got some gifts for the family. Then back onto the bus for an hour back to the hotel. Veronica and I are in a room and we both showered and called our families.

Dinner at 18.30 with Dr. Jose. I actually ate a 14 oz steak! It was so good! I also had a gallito-blue caracaus, malibu rum, pineapple and orange juice-tasted like a blue smarty.

Got a little bit burned today but nothing major. How I managed to not get burned when we were in the sun for hours on end but I do when we're out for 20 minutes is beyond me...

After lunch yesterday we took an hour and ten minute death march each way through the depths of hell in the jungle to get to a bat cave. After crawling through guano, a shower was absolutely necessary.

Played a few games before and after dinner. My back was bothering me a ton. Bed at 20.00 then wake up at 6.00. Did some bird watching and identification beore breakfast then went out with Paul to survey understory species diversity. It took like 2.5 hours. Lunch was rice and beans (get out! no way!) with chicken and beef.

After lunch we went with Steven to do some herping in 8 x 8 plots in the jungle. found 2 strawberry poison dart frogs!

Some pancake like thing and guess what? beans and rice was for dinner. Then we had the lecture by stephen whitfield on amphibian declines and then finished packing before bed.

Some people are starting to get annoyed with each other, but its a miracle that it even lasted this long! And it stopped raining for a total of 3 hours today...but its back!

6.January.2010 10.10

It still hasn't stopped raining. Only Veronica, David and I were awake this morning. Breakfast was late, at 7.30. Rice beans, papya, eggs and bananas. I opted for corn flakes and bananas again. Because it's raining we had class inside. We learned the political history of Nicaragua and the relationships with the US and Costa Rica (The contra vs. sandanistas, current politics, how the US backed the dictator Samosa and then the Contras with the school of americas etc)

It was a lecture that just seemed to hit home when thinking about how absolutely overbearing our goverment it with other countries. Carlos, the farm hand, is from Nicaragua and his story of himself, his sister and brothers and how they came to Costa Rica was fascinating.

Lunch happened about 25 minutes late. Chicken fried rice, rice, lentils, beans and what they called coleslaw but it looks alien.

After lunch we hung out for a while and then my half of the class went on our reserve walk. Veronica and I were hoping it would jungle pour while we were deep in the forest, and it did rain, but not an actual downpour, just a regular rain...

I actually showered today, for the fourth time in 7 days on the trip. I've showered just about the same as most except for George who showered once and Kevin, who also showered once. On top of actually showering today, I changed my clothes for the first time since Sunday afternoon (however I did change my underwear a few times in there, just not the shorts and tank top)

We've had a few cows wander on down the road and its cooler here and a bit less humid. Probabl about 75 in the rain and about 82 in the sun. A pretty decent improvement from the first site.

Played some Kemps with George, Danielle and Veronica. George and Veronica had obnoxiously crazy signs but Danielle and I were holding our own pretty well.

Dinner was at quarter to 7. Rice beet salad, beans and some crazy juice of some sort. It pretty much sucks and I'm kind of hungry, but it's probably good because I ate so much at MOrgans and now I'm back to what I would normally eat at home.

We had presentations and then the guys wanted to see what the 8 of us on our side were living in. They laughed at how all 8 of us were crammed in, bt I laughed at them for having to walk all the way back to their house in the pouring rain and having cold water showers because only my house had the hot water.

We're pretending Dr. Robbins is God-she shares a ceiling with us.

Went to bed, woke  up a few times. It started raining at 6 am but all of our clothes on the line are under ledges thank goodness. When I woke up for real I noticed a bumpy itchy rash on my hands, wrists and my left elbow and shoulder. Used an anti-itch cream and hopefully it will go away shortly.

Breakfast was supposed to be 7 but didn't happen until 7.45 or so. Eggs, rice, beans and fried plantains. I instead took the banana, pineapple and corn flake route. After breakfast i took a nap to ward off an oncoming migraine. Worked pretty well and Sam woke me up so I didn't waste away my free time, and I was able to do some of my proposal critiques.

Lunch is suposedly in 35 minutes...I'm also kind of upset that we're learning mostly plant stuff here...I'm not particularly fond of the plants and I don't think anyone else is either.

Went to the waterfall after lunch-Absolutely gorgeous! We talked about the fact that we were on what a movie set would look like and made up an indiana jones scene. I also had a pair of mating dragonflies land on my ear. Yes, they were having sex on my ear. Watched the white collared swifts roost for the night, walked back and saw my first bullet ant-1.5 inches long and they sting!

The bus to our taxi pick up was 2 hours from the airport. Then we had a taxi ride, which was interesting. Dave, Sam, Veronica and I sat in what I'm sure is only supposed to hold 2 people. Veronica and I smashed our heads together and slid all over the place, making for only the most legitimate costa rican taxi experience i'm sure.

We're at La Virgen and the Bijagual reserve. It's an actual building, and we're sleeping 8 of us upstairs in a tiny crammed room, but we have mosquito nets. So far it's not as great as Morgans...

My GPS thing doesn't seem to be working-keeps saying it can't find a signal...wish i knew if it was working or not.

Lunch is beef stew...I dont' eat beef usually. BUt the vegetarian option is cauliflower omelette....and I don't eat omelettes...
